Wolfsburg v Manchester United

The analysts from BetRepublic.com, including former footballer Steve Claridge and co-host James Eastham look at this Tuesday Champions League matchup.

Taking on Manchester United in Tuesday’s Champions League game against Wolfsburg looks like the value play to make in what could be a lively encounter.

The German side are eighth in the Bundlesliga after their 2-2 draw with Freiburg at the weekend and will be desperate for a victory to ensure progress in their first-ever Champions League campaign. Here at BetRepublic.com we think Wolfsburg won’t win although they can definitely take a point out of the game and we favour backing the draw at a best-priced 12/5 with William Hill.

One point is exactly what Sir Alex Ferguson’s side needs to secure top spot in their group and they will certainly settle for a draw on Tuesday night. There is more than a little frustration in the United camp that they are heading to Saxony still actually needing a point having unexpectedly lost 1-0 to Besiktas last time out.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s plans are further complicated by the fact that Patrice Evra is his only fit, senior defender, meaning that the United manager’s rearguard will certainly have a makeshift look.

Michael Carrick could once again fill in at centre back, with Darren Fletcher also helping out at the back as he did in the 4-0 win at West Ham at the weekend.

Youngsters Oliver Norwood, Matthew James, Magnus Eikrem, Cameron Stewart and Oliver Gill have all been taken to Germany, with Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov left at home. Finishing second would hardly be a disaster but United will want to head through to the knock out phase as group winners so back them to take the point needed back to Old Trafford with them.

BetRepublic.com Betting Recommendation:

1.5pt on the draw at 12/5 with William Hill

In terms of total games played and goals scored.
I have checked the obvious, Liverpool, chelsea.Arsenal, Villa and even Le*ds(they were good once!!LOL) and Manchester United have won more games against these teams than they have been beaten and also scored more.

Denis law A Scottish Striker

Aston Villa Football Team play at Villa Park Stadium in Birmingham. Aston Villa Football Team have played football there since 1897.

Denis Law from My Football Facts & Stats Legendary Players

Denis Law (born 24 February 1940) enjoyed a long and successful career as a Scottish striker from the 1950s to the 1970s. Law’s career as a football player began at Second Division Huddersfield Town in 1956. After four years at Huddersfield, Manchester City signed him for a transfer fee of £55,000, setting a new British record. Law spent one year there before Torino bought him for £110,000, this time setting a new record fee for a transfer between an English and an Italian club. Although he played well in Italy, he found it difficult to settle there and signed for Manchester United in 1962, setting another British record transfer fee of £115,000.

He is best known for the eleven years that he spent at United, where he scored 237 goals in 409 appearances and was nicknamed The King and The Lawman by supporters. He is the only Scottish player in history to have won the prestigious European Footballer of the Year award, doing so in 1964, and helped his club win the First Division in 1965 and 1967. Law left Manchester United in 1973 and returned to Manchester City for a season, then represented Scotland in the 1974 FIFA World Cup. Law played for Scotland a total of 55 times and jointly holds the Scottish international record goal tally with 30 goals. Law is also United’s second highest goalscorer behind Bobby Charlton. Law holds a United record for scoring 46 goals in a single season.

In the 1954–55 season, he was spotted by Archie Beattie, a scout for Huddersfield Town, who invited him to go for a trial. When he got there, the manager said, “The boy’s a freak. Never did I see a less likely football prospect — weak, puny and bespectacled.” However, to Law’s surprise, they signed him on 3 April 1955. While he was at Huddersfield, he had an operation to correct his squint, which greatly enhanced his self confidence. Huddersfield’s relegation to what was then the Second Division made it easier for Law to get a game, and he made his debut on 24 December 1956, aged only sixteen, in a 2–0 win over Notts County. Manchester United’s manager Matt Busby shortly offered Huddersfield £10,000 for Law, a substantial amount of money for a footballer at that time, but the club turned the offer down. He was not picked to play for Scotland in the 1958 FIFA World Cup, but scored on his debut against Wales on 18 October 1958 and quickly established himself as a first choice player. Bill Shankly was manager of Huddersfield between 1957 and 1959, and when he left for Liverpool he wanted to take Law with him, but Liverpool were unable to afford him at that time.

In March 1960, Law signed for Manchester City for what was then a British record transfer fee of £55,000, although Law’s share of the fee was “precisely nothing”. Although a First Division side, City had narrowly avoided relegation the previous season, and he genuinely felt that Huddersfield had a better team at the time. Law made his debut on 19 March, scoring in a 4–3 defeat to Leeds United. In April 1961, he scored two goals in a 4–1 win over Aston Villa that ensured City’s survival in Division One Although he had thought about leaving, he was playing well and in 1961 Law scored an incredible six goals in an FA Cup tie against Luton Town. Unfortunately for him, the match was abandoned with twenty minutes to go, so his six goals didn’t count. To make matters worse for him, Luton won the replay 3–1, and City were knocked out of the Cup.

He played but did not score in Scotland’s match against England on 15 April 1961. Scotland lost the match 9–3, and Law described it as his “blackest day”. The following November, Law represented the Football League in a match against the Italian League, losing 4–2. Although he enjoyed his time at City, he wanted to play in a more successful side and was sold to the Italian club Torino in the summer of 1961. Law’s time in Italy did not go according to plan. Another Italian club, Internazionale, tried to prevent him becoming a Torino player as soon as he arrived, claiming he had signed a pre-contract agreement with them, although they dropped this claim before the season started.

Players in the UK were not treated well at the time, and the maximum wage for footballers had only recently been abolished there, so he was pleasantly surprised to find that pre-season training was based in a luxury hotel in the Alps. However, Torino took performance-related pay to something of an extreme, giving the players bags full of money when the team won but little, if anything, when they lost. Like many British footballers who have gone to play in Italy, Law did not like the style of football and found adapting to it difficult. The ultra-defensive catenaccio system was popular there at the time, so forwards did not get many chances to score. He continued to play for Scotland while he was at Torino, although the club were not keen to release him for international matches and had put a clause into his contract stating that they were not obliged to do so. On 7 February 1962, he was injured in a car crash when his teammate Joe Baker drove the wrong way around a roundabout and clipped the kerb as he tried to turn the car around, flipping it over. Baker was almost killed, but Law’s injuries were not life-threatening. Law eventually signed for United on 10 July 1962, for a new British record fee of £115,000.

Law moved back to Manchester, boarding with the same landlady that he had lived with during his time as a City player. His first match for United was against West Bromwich Albion on 18 August 1962, and he made an excellent start, scoring after only seven minutes. The match finished in a 2–2 draw. However, United’s form had been erratic since the Munich air disaster in 1958, and because of their inconsistency they spent the season fighting relegation. In a league match against Leicester City Law scored a hat trick but United still lost. They found form in the FA Cup though, with Law scoring another hat trick in a 5–0 win against his old club Huddersfield, and they went on to reach the final against Leicester City. Leicester were strong favourites, having finished fourth in the league, but Law scored the first goal as United won 3–1 in what turned out to be the only FA Cup final of his career. He also married his wife Diana that season, on 11 December 1962.

Law scored a number of goals early in the 1963–64 season and was selected to play for a Rest of the World side against England at Wembley, scoring their goal in a 2–1 defeat. He later described this as the greatest honour of his career. His season was interrupted by a 28-day suspension for a sending off that he received against Aston Villa. The unusually cold winter forced United to play many of their fixtures in a short space of time, and their results suffered. Law later blamed this for United’s failure to win a trophy in that season.
In 1964–65, Law won the European Footballer of the Year award, and Manchester United won their first league title since Munich. Law’s 28 league goals that season made him the First Division’s top scorer. The following season, Law injured his right knee while playing for Scotland against Poland on 21 October 1965. He had previously had an operation on the same knee while at Huddersfield, and the injury was to trouble him for the rest of his career.

In 1966, Law asked United’s manager Matt Busby to give him a pay rise at his next contract renewal, and threatened to leave the club if he did not get one. Busby immediately placed Law on the transfer list, announcing that “no player will hold this club to ransom, no player”. When Law went to see him, Busby pulled out a written apology for him to sign, showing it to the press once he had done so. Law later claimed that Busby had used the incident to warn other players not to do the same thing, but had secretly given him the pay rise. Law scored in Scotland’s famous 3–2 victory over England on 15 April 1967 in the 1967 British Home Championship, less than a year after England had become world champions. Manchester United won the league that season, but Law felt that the victory over England was even more satisfying.

In 1968, United won the European Cup for the first time, but Law’s knee injury was causing him serious problems and he missed both the semi-final and the final as a result. He was regularly given cortisone injections to ease the pain, but playing while the knee was still injured was causing long-term damage. He visited a specialist in January 1968 who wrote to United claiming that a previous operation to remove the cartilage from the knee had failed and recommending that a second operation be performed, but Law was not shown the report for several years and had to continue full training.
In 1968–69, United reached the semi-final of the European Cup, playing AC Milan. United lost the first leg in the San Siro 2–0, winning the second leg at Old Trafford 1–0 with a Bobby Charlton goal. Law put the ball over the line only to see it kicked away by a Milan defender. Law claimed a goal but the referee waved play on and United went out on aggregate. Busby, who had now been knighted, resigned at the end of the season and United’s decline began.

After a poor 1970–71 season, Frank O’Farrell took over as United manager. They made a good start to the 1971–72 season and finished 1971 five points clear at the top of the league, with Law having scored twelve goals. Docherty gave Law a free transfer in the summer of 1973, and he moved back to Manchester City. He played in City’s 2–1 defeat in the League Cup final against Wolves. In City’s last game of the 1973–74 season against Manchester United at Old Trafford, Law’s back-heel gave City a 1–0 win but, thinking his goal had relegated United, he did not celebrate it (it turned out they would have been relegated even if the match had been drawn but Law did not know this at the time), walking off the pitch with his head down as he was substituted immediately afterwards. This game was the last of his professional career, as he retired shortly afterwards, not wanting to be confined to the reserve team of a City side who were bringing in younger players. Scotland reached the World Cup finals in the summer of 1974, for the first time since 1958. Although he had not played much first team football in the preceding season, Law was included in the squad and played in their first match, against Zaire. He didn’t score, but Scotland won 2–0. Law was “very disappointed” not to be picked for the following match against Brazil, and was not selected for the following match against Yugoslavia either. Although Scotland were not defeated in any of their matches, they did not qualify for the second phase and were out of the World Cup.

Law still had a contract with Manchester City but their manager Tony Book told him that he would only be playing reserve team football if he stayed. He did not want to end his career in this way, so he retired from professional football in the summer of 1974. Since then, Law has often worked on radio and television summarising and presenting games.

Football Shirts Sporting Colors

Chelsea home is Stamford Bridge Stadium in West London. Chelsea have played there since April 1887.

Fans of the Chelsea Football Club love to sport its royal blue colors and ever-changing crest which happens to be, currently, a lion carrying a staff.  The good news – for fans – is that Chelsea football shirts are available in all sizes, for practically all ages. Like, we keep saying, football shirts make for great fashion gear as well. If blue happens to be your favorite color you would simply dig the Clelsea scarves, shirts, and T-shirts. Most people would be aware that Chelsea Club representatives have always donned blue although, in the beginning, they wore its lighter version. This shade was inspired by its then president Earl Cardogan who loved the races. Votaries of Chelsea’s much sought-after Premier League are bound to love its navy blue-collared shirt with three buttons running down the front. It  is called – you guessed it – the Chelsea 2009/10 Premier League Winners Polo-Nay Shirt.

The 2010-12 Chelsea home shirt, manufactured by Adidas, seems to epitomize relaxation. A high collar in red and white and piping running down its short sleeves, the Chelsea home shirt looks the picture of leisure. What is more, fans can now customize their shirt by imprinting the name of their favorite star.

With the new season coming around, Adidas has struck a different pitch. The new Chelsea away shirt manufactured by the company happens to be a legend in white with grey stripes and black trim. Whatever happened to the royal blue, a lot of fans have been asking. The thing is this: the Chelsea away shirt looks conservative and cool and is already wooing fans.

Those who love dramatic colors such as rust, black, pink et al   would love to get into Barcelona gear. Most Barcelona Football – actually ‘futbol’ – Club fans hail this Catalan institution as mas que en club or ‘more than a club’. It is, as everyone knows, one of the most popular clubs throughout the world. It is also one of the clubs to have enjoyed highest success in European football. No wonder, its colors are so cheerful and jocose.

The members of the Barcelona Futbol Club have always resolutely refused to flaunt company logos on their shirt fronts, preferring instead, to advertise the UNICEF logo. It is a treat to watch Barcelona team members in cherry pink football shirts with a high neck and sleeves in black trim carrying the UNICEF message. That’s the away shirt available at £ 44.99.

it must be mentioned that the 2008-09 Barcelona away long-sleeved shirt in egg-yolk with black trims and the ochre short-sleeved 2007-08 Barcelona 3rd away shirt remain major attractions to this day.

A recent attraction is the 2009-10 Barcelona Goal Keeper home shirt. Sleek-looking with its long tapering sleeves, this smart Nike shirt with red and blue stripes tracing running down vertical lines against a black background looks chic and sits well on all ages. You have the choice of customizing this shirt by imprinting the name of your favorite player. Available at £ 49.99 wearers of this shirt are also able to add sleeve patches at £ 5.

Mike Greaves is a self-made entrepreneur, a well known sports shirts consultant and internet marketer. Over the years he has football shirt across the world and has numerous writings credited to his name in many renowned publications. After taking an early lead in Portugal last week, Liverpool would have hoped that they would have brought something back to Anfield for the second leg. However, Ryan Babel’s red card saw gave Benfica a way back into the game and they scored twice to lead the tie. However, Liverpool have an away goal and anything could yet happen in the next ninety minutes.

Liverpool are in inconsistent form overall, but at home they have won their last eight matches and have conceded just two goals in the process. Benfica are on an undefeated run of twenty-seven games in all competitions. Their away form is excellent also, having won ten and drawn five of last fifteen away games. They have won their last four away games and in the fifteen they have beaten Everton and Marseille amongst others.

Benfica will not fear travelling to Anfield, nor will Liverpool hosting the Portuguese side and this could prove to be an excellent football match. I feel that Liverpool will struggle to progress in this match, despite their excellent recent home record, as Benfica have found the net in fourteen of their fifteen unbeaten away matches and they possess the ability to score in Merseyside, as proven by their 2-0 win over Everton. Also, in the three matches that these sides have played Benfica have won all three, with an aggregate score of 5-1. I see both sides scoring in the game, but I don’t think either side will take victory on the night.

Buying Shares at Liverpool Football Club?

I understand that a Liverpool supporters group are mid way in their bid in buying shares at Anfield. I believe their £500 a share. As a neutral, who happens to have some cash, is it worth investing in the shares? It is a rare opportunity to buy shares from a football club, but will their be a guarntee that it will be worth investing?

Thank you for reading.

Answer
They are not actually for sale.

The Shareliverpool idea is all dependent on the two yanks at some point wanting to (or having to) actually sell all or part of the club – something which so far they have made no noises to indicate that they will.

When they took over they paid £5000 per share – which was roughly the going rate at the time.

I dont think they you should be looking at is as an investment as such – as the shares are not going to continue to be onsale and certainly wont be floated on the open market.
This website will give you info about what they are trying to do

Manchester United Russian Visa Deal is Agreed

Man Utd home is Old Trafford in the Trafford Borough of Greater Manchester. Man Utd have played there since 1910.

The Russian authorities have announced that fans of Manchester United and will be allowed to enter Moscow without a visa to watch their teams play in the Uefa European Cup final. Fans will be able to escape Russia’s notoriously strict visa restrictions by simply presenting a valid match ticket on arrival.

The 42,000 football fans that are estimated to have tickets for the Moscow match will welcome the Russian authorities’ announcement, particularly as there were fears that Britain’s ongoing political tension with Russia would hamper attempts to secure a ‘visa-free’ deal. The visa-free decision will also take pressure off the overworked staff at the Russian Embassy, who have been working non-stop to try and issue visas to the thousands of football fans in time for the final, which takes place on the 21st May.

The visa-free deal proposed by the Russian authorities will allow Manchester United and Chelsea fans to use their match tickets as a visa substitute for a 72-hour period between 19 and 23 May. In addition to their valid match ticket, the football fans will also need to present their passports and a completed immigration form to the authorities when they arrive on Russian soil. Those who overstay the 72-hour visa-free entry period will be forced to pay the regular visa fee of around £150 – £200 on his or her departure.

The Russian visa announcement comes after a series of discussions between Michel Platini, President of Uefa, and the Russian government. Mr Platini said that the Russian visa concession was “exceptional and unprecedented” and a “historical decision.” He also exclaimed that the long-awaited announcement was “great news.” He said: “This is great news for football fans travelling to watch this year’s Uefa Champions League final in Moscow. Our job is to make sure that they are able to get to and from Moscow as easily as possible. I am therefore extremely pleased that at my request, all fans travelling with a valid match ticket can use this to enter Russian territory.” Mr Platini also thanked Russia for their co-operation. He said: “I must thank wholeheartedly the president of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, the Russian government, the city of Moscow and the Football Union of Russia.”

The decision has obviously reduced demand for visas, so the Manchester United and Chelsea fans that are hoping to travel to Russia independently and buy a match ticket in Moscow should have their visas processed in time. However, the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office are advising supporters in this situation not to travel to Moscow “if they do not have a ticket or accommodation beforehand.”

Manchester United Moves Closer to Premier League Title

Manchester United Football Club are located at Old Trafford Football Ground in the Trafford Borough of Greater Manchester. Manchester United Football Club have played there since 1910.

Manchester United edged closed to another English Premier League title after beating Manchester City 2-0. First-half goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez took them four points from the league title. The soccer game between the two teams was far entertaining.

Once again, Ronaldo produced another superb free-kick to put United in front. The distance of around 30 yards was small by the world player of the year’s recent standards. He duly strode up with confidence and fired into the corner, Given wrong-footed by the merest flick off Nigel de Jong.

Manchester City had plenty of possession, but did very little to threaten the home goal. First, it was Wayne Bridge who curled over a shot from the left flank but Nemanja Vidic headed clear, then Robinho fired wide after shrugging Rafael Da Silva off the ball.

Play quickly switched to the other end where a piece of impudence from Patrice Evra offered Tevez the chance to run into space and curl a shot towards the City goal which came crashing back off the angle of post and crossbar. Just before the break, Fletcher’s long ball was controlled by Berbatov. He square the ball to Tevez, whose precision shot bounced in off the post.

Manchester City needed a break and it should have arrived when Elano picked out Robinho with a deft right-wing cross. But Robinho blast his shot wide after he managed to control the ball. The striker again got ahead of Rafael and seemed destined to test Edwin van der Sar, only to inexplicably fire well wide.

On the hour mark, Ji-Sung Park and Ronaldo were substituted with Paul Scholes and Wayne Rooney respectively. Ronaldo look unhappy and not impressed at the decision and was still shaking his head after he had taken his place in the dug-out. Sir Alex Ferguson might have the Champions League Final on his mind and do not want to his squad to be over strech.

Manchester United almost struck their 3rd-goal if not for Richard Dunne, who had made a last-ditch tackle to deny Scholes. Darren Fletcher rose to meet the corner, only for Tevez to strike the post with his header as he dived in and made contact less than half a yard out.

Liverpool – the beat goes on

Liverpool Football Club home is Anfield Football Ground in the city of Liverpool. Liverpool Football Club have played there since 1892.

Liverpool is the home of ‘Merseybeat’ – the sound that challenged London’s monopoly on pop music in the 1960s and carved itself a name in the history of music. But there is much more to Liverpool than just The Beatles. The poets Roger McGough and Brian Patten were born there, the Titanic was registered in Liverpool’s port and the city was one of the first with an intercity rail connection, along with Manchester. Another claim to fame is that The John Lennon Airport is the only airport in Britain to be named after a celebrity, apart of course from the George Best airport in Belfast.

Liverpool is also one of the many major cities and towns in Britain to have serviced apartments, which are becoming the smart alternatives to hotels in Liverpool. At Serviced City Pads we have a team of operators with excellent local knowledge who will be able to find accommodation for you in most parts of Liverpool that will be perfect for your requirements.

You may wonder why you should consider serviced apartments in Liverpool a viable alternative to hotels in Liverpool. The reason for this assertion is that serviced apartments have the standards of excellence expected of hotels in Liverpool, but at a lower cost. The apartments are also more spacious, with separate bedrooms and fully fitted kitchens. Also, the maid service ensures that you will have fresh towels and bed-linen.

Liverpool is also a city of excellence for sport. Since the Football League was formed in 1888, Liverpool is the only city in England to have two football teams that have always remained in the highest league, old style First Division and its successor the Premiership. If you want to visit Liverpool in search of culture, then you will be in for a treat. Liverpool has the largest number of art galleries and museums in the country, outside of London.

The Hidden Tourist Sites of Birmingham

Aston Villa are located at Villa Park Stadium in Birmingham. Aston Villa have played there since 1897.

Perhaps surprisingly Birmingham does have a castle and a few truly ancient buildings alongside a lot of other attractions for visitors to see. The image of Birmingham as a dull industrialised city dominated by the car is simply no longer true. Gone are the crumbling factories, warehouses and monstrous concrete blocks, which have been replaced with modern and stylish buildings and now form the bedrock of a rejuvenated and vibrant city. Birmingham has also made the most of the heritage it does owe to the industrial age, which alongside the introduction and development of exciting new attractions, gives visitors to the city plenty to choose from.

One of the countries, as well as Birmingham’s, top tourist attractions is Cadbury World, which tells the story of chocolate in the UK and the Cadbury Company in Birmingham. Cadbury World is suitable for all ages, and is both fun and educational. Part of the visit is to go on the tour of the factory, some of which is walked and for other parts you’re transported around in small vehicles along a programmed route. As well as there being a Cadbury shop to visit there are ‘free’ samples as you go around on the tour. The city has a Birmingham Railway Museum at Tyseley, which has vintage steam locomotives and a locomotive shed dating back to 1908. You can also organise a trip by steam train from Birmingham to Stratford-Upon-Avon.

The ThinkTank Museum, at Millennium Point is the location for the city’s Science museum which includes a Planetarium. The Barber Institute of Fine Arts is in the Birmingham University campus. It won the Gallery of the Year award in 2004 and apart from displaying works of art is used for musical concerts. A less likely place than Birmingham to find a Sea Life Centre is hard to imagine. However, behind the ICC, at Brindley Place is the National Sea Life Centre. Its 60 displays cover all marine life from Sharks to Jellyfish, as well as some mammals such as Sae Otters.

Owned by the National Trust, Birmingham has preserved some Back-to-Back Houses, on Hurst Street, from the 19th century showing how the workers in the early industrial revolution would have lived. The canals were the motorways of the early industrial revolution and Birmingham sits at the heart of the regions network of canals. With more kilometres of canals than Venice, there are plenty of walks and guided tours along them. The best starting point is to go to the Gas Street Basin, behind the ICC and NIA. Completely revamped in the 1990s Victoria Square, in front of the Town Hall, is now a modern piazza style meeting place in the city. The first time they’re seen, The Iron Man and the Floozie in the Jacuzzi are always certain to be the topic of conversation. Centenary Square, in front of the ICC, Symphony Hall and the Repertory Theatre on Broad Street, is the newest public space in the city centre. It is another popular meeting place and is often used as a venue for outdoor concerts and events.

The jewel in the crown of Birmingham’s museums has to be the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, which is on Chamberlain Square behind the Town Hall. The Art Gallery has the largest collection of pre-Raphaelite paintings in the world, alongside Old Masters and Impressionists. The pre-Raphaelite collection includes works by: Ford Maddox Brown, Burne-Jones, Rossetti, Millais and Holman Hunt. The Museum itself houses archaeological exhibitions as well as natural and social history displays. The Museum of the Jewellery Quarter is exactly as the name implies. Housed in what was the Smith & Pepper jewellery factory on Vyse Street, it provides a snap-shot of working conditions and practices around the middle of the 20th century. Many of the machinery and tools that were in use when the factory closed down pre-date the 20th century, with some artefacts on display going back 200 years.

Aston Hall is one of the city’s older buildings; it is known that a manor has been on this site since 1386. The present 400 year old mansion sits in 21 hectares of parkland next to Aston Villa football club and has some fine Jacobean plasterwork and a 120m Long Gallery decorated with 17th century tapestries. On its outside walls you can still see the marks left by bullets and cannonballs from the English Civil War. Owned by Matthew Boulton, a member of the Lunar Society, Soho House was the first centrally heated home in the country as well as being a hot-house of ideas in the industrial revolution! Sarehole Mill, in the suburb of Hall Green, is popular as a museum to show how a mill would have operated and because of its connection with J R Tolkein, author of The Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit.

Whilst almost hidden away in the suburb of the same name is Birmingham’s Weoley Castle. In truth not much remains of what was really more of a fortified 13th century moated manor house. However, excavations have shown evidence of an earlier 11th century castle on the site. Selly Manor and Blakesley Hall are two of Birmingham’s older buildings that visitors may well find interesting. Finally, you will need to contact the Museums Collection Centre to arrange a visit, but if you’re fortunate enough for them to have an open day when you can be there, you’ll see a fascinating collection of items that periodically appear in the city’s various museums.

Moving not too far outside of the city there are many nearby attractions. At Solihull is the National Motorcycle Museum, whilst historic Warwick Castle can be reached in about 45 minutes as can Stratford-Upon-Avon, with all its associations and history of William Shakespeare and the Shakespeare Theatre.

Susan Ashby of Birmingham Singles has travelled extensively around the United Kingdom writing articles on each of the major cities. To read more articles on Birmingham or for dating in Birmingham visit http://www.birmingham-singles.co.uk

English Footballamp#039s 1000 yearamp#039s of History

Liverpool Football Team home is Anfield Football Ground in the city of Liverpool. Liverpool Football Team have played there since 1892.

Imbued in English culture is a love and inventor of Sports of all kinds.

I have a website where I have listed and linked to the 100+ various sports and games created by us Brits. Our national game is Football which It is believed was first played over a 1,000 years ago in English villages up and down the country. There are stories that villager’s played against villager’s and the aim of the game was to get the ball passed the opposing village boundary line. The rules included kicking, punching, scratching the opposition over and above the kicking of the ball.

1280 AD – Earliest form of ball kicking

The earliest recorded form of ball kicking was recorded in England in 1280 AD at Ulgham near Ashington in Northumberland. A player was killed by running into an opposing players dagger.

1314 AD – The first banning of Football

In 1314, comes the earliest reference to a game called football when Nicholas de Farndone Lord Mayor of the City of London issued a decree on behalf of King Edward II banning football. It was written in the French used by the English upper classes at the time. A translation reads: “For as much as there is great noise in the city caused by hustling over large foot balls in the fields of the public from which many evils might arise which God forbid: we command and forbid on behalf of the king, on pain of imprisonment, such game to be used in the city in the future.”

1409 AD – First banning of betting on Football

In 1409 King Henry IV of England gives us the first documented use of the English word “football” when issued a proclamation forbidding the levying of money for “foteball”.

1481 AD – Earliest description of Football Game At the end of the 15th century comes the earliest description of a football game. This account in Latin of a football game contains a number of features of modern football and comes from Cawston, Nottinghamshire, England. It is included in a manuscript collection of the miracles of King Henry VI of England. Although the precise date is uncertain it certainly comes from between 1481 and 1500. This is the first account of an exclusively “kicking game” and the first description of dribbling. “The game at which they had met for common recreation is called by some the foot-ball game. It is one in which young men, in country sport, propel a huge ball not by throwing it into the air but by striking it and rolling it along the ground, and that not with their hands but with their feet… kicking in opposite directions” The chronicler gives the earliest reference to a football field, stating that: “The boundaries have been marked and the game had started.

1526 AD – First Football Boots In 1526 comes the first record of a pair of football boots occurs when Henry VIII of England ordered a pair from the Great Wardrobe in 1526. Unfortunately these are no longer in existence.

1581 AD – First organised Team Sport In 1581 comes the earliest account of football as an organised team sport. Richard Mulcaster, a student at Eton College in the early 16th century and later headmaster at other English schools provides the earliest references to teams (“sides” and “parties”), positions (“standings”), a referee (“judge over the parties”) and a coach “(trayning maister)”. Mulcaster’s “footeball” had evolved from the disordered and violent forms of traditional football:

[s]ome smaller number with such overlooking, sorted into sides and standings, not meeting with their bodies so boisterously to trie their strength: nor shouldring or shuffing one an other so barbarously … may use footeball for as much good to the body, by the chiefe use of the legges.

Mulcaster also confirms that in sixteenth century England football was very popular and widespread: it had attained “greatnes. .. [and was] much used … in all places”

Despite this violence continued to be a problem. For example, the parish archives of North Moreton, Oxfordshire for May 1595 state: “Gunter’s son and ye Gregorys fell together by ye years at football. Old Gunter drew his dagger and both broke their heads, and they died both within a fortnight after.”

1600 AD – First reference to Scoring a Goal

The first direct references to scoring a goal come from England in the 1600s. For example, in John Day’s play ‘The Blind Beggar of Bethnal Green (performed circa 1600; published 1659): “I’ll play a gole at camp-ball” (an extremely violent variety of football, which was popular in East Anglia. Similarly in a poem in 1613, Michael Drayton refers to “when the Ball to throw, And drive it to the Gole, in squadrons forth they goe”.

1602 AD – First reference to Passing the Ball In 1602 the earliest reference to a game involving passing the ball comes from cornish hurling. In particular Carew tells us that: “Then must he cast the ball (named Dealing) to some one of his fellowes”. In this case, however, the pass is by hand, as in rugby football. Although there are other allusions to ball passing in seventeenth century literature, this is the only one which categorically states that the ball was passed to another member of the same team. There are no other explicit references to passing the ball between members of the same team until the 1860s, however, in 1650 English puritan Richard baxter alludes to player to player passing of the ball during a football game in his book Everlasting Rest: “like a Football in the midst of a crowd of Boys, tost about in contention from one to another”.

1608 AD – Outlawing of Football in Cities

Football continued to be outlawed in English cities, for example the Manchester Lete Roll contains a resolution, dated 12 October 1608: “That whereas there hath been heretofore great disorder in our towne of Manchester, and the inhabitants thereof greatly wronged and charged with makinge and amendinge of their glasse windows broken yearlye and spoyled by a companye of lewd and disordered psons vsing that unlawfull exercise of playinge with the ffote-ball in ye streets of ye sd toune breakinge many men’s windowes and glasse at their plesures and other great enormyties. Therefore, wee of this jurye doe order that no manner of psons hereafter shall play or use the footeball in any street within the said toune of Manchester, subpœnd to evye one that shall so use the same for evye time xiid”.

Although football was frequently outlawed in England, it remained popular even with the ruling classes. For example, during the reign of King James I of England James Howelll mentions how Lord Willoughby and Lord Sunderland enjoyed playing football, for example:”Lord Willoughby, and he, with so many of their servants … play’d a match at foot- ball against such a number of Countrymen, where my Lord of Sunderland being busy about the ball, got a bruise in the breast.

1624 AD – First concept of Football Teams

The concept of football teams is mentioned by English Poet Edmund Waller in c1624: He mentions a “a sort [i.e. company]of lusty shepherds try their force at football, care of victory… They ply their feet, and still the restless ball, Toss’d to and fro, is urged by them all”. The last line suggests that playing as a team emerged much earlier in English football than previously thought.

1638 AD – Popularity of Football

Football continued to be popular throughout seventeenth century England. For example in 1634 Davenant is quoted (in Hones Table-Book) as remarking, “I would now make a safe retreat, but methinks Jam stopped by one of your heroic gamea called football; which I conceive (under your favor) not very conveniently civil in the streets, especially in such irregular and narrow roads as Crooked Lane. Yet it argues your courage, much like your military pastime of throwing at cocks, since you have long allowed these two valiant exercises in the streets”. Similarly in 1638 Thomas Randolp suggests this in the following lines from one of his plays: “Madam, you may in time bring down his legs To the just size, now overgrown with playing Too much at foot-ball”.

1660 AD – First Objective study of Football In 1660 comes the first objective study of football, given in Francis Willughby’s Book of Sports, written in about 1660. This account is particularly noteworthy as he refers to football by its correct name and is the first to describe the following: goals and a pitch (“a close that has a gate at either end. The gates are called Goals”), tactics (“leaving some of their best players to guard the goal”), scoring (“they that can strike the ball through their opponents’ goal first win”) and the way teams were selected (“the players being equally divided according to their strength and nimbleness”). He is the first to describe a law of football: “They often break one another’s shins when two meet and strike both together against the ball, and therefore there is a law that they must not strike higher than the ball”. His book includes the first (basic) diagram illustrating a modern football pitch.

Football continued to be played in the later seventeenth century, even in cities such as London. The great diarist Samuel Pepys, for example, states in 1665 that in a London street “the streete being full of footballs”

1840′s AD – Codified Football England was the first country in the world to develop codified football, coming about from a desire of its various public schools to compete against each other. Previously, each school had its own rules, which may have dated back to the fifteenth or sixteenth centuries. The first attempts to come up with single codes probably began in the 1840s, with various meetings between school representatives attempting to come up with a set of rules with which all would be happy. The first attempt was The Cambridge Rules, created in 1848; others developed their own sets, most notably Sheffield F.C. (1855) and J.C. Thring(1862). These were moulded into one set in 1863 when the Football Association was formed; though some clubs continued to play under the Sheffield Rules 1878, and others dissented to form Rugby Union instead. The 1863 rules of the Football Association provides the first reference in the English Language to the verb to “pass” a ball.

1866 AD – First Player to be Ruled Offside C.W.Alcock became the first footballer ever to be ruled off side on 31 March 1866, confirming that players were probing ways of exploiting the new off side rule right from the start. The offside rule was introduced in 1866 into the Football Association rules. It was almost identical to the one that had been part of the Cambridge Rules.

The early Sheffield Rules were particularly important as their offside system allowed poaching or sneaking and thus demonstrated the use of the forward pass: Players known as “kick throughs” were positioned permanently near the opponents goal to receive these balls. According to C.W. Alcock the Sheffield style gave birth to the modern passing game. The Sheffield Rules of 1862later included both crossbars and half time and free kicks were introduced to their code in 1866.

1867 AD – The Oldest Football Cup in the World The Youdan Cup was an association football competition played in Sheffield, England. A local theatre owner Thomas Youdan sponsored the competition and provided the trophy. The trophy itself was made of silver, and although Thomas Youdan awarded a £2 prize to the winner of a competition to design the trophy, it was not completed in time to be presented on the day to the winners.

The format of the competition was drawn up by a committee and played under Sheffield Rules. The first two rounds were on a knock-out basis, however the final was contested between three teams playing each other in turn.

The final was played at Bramell Lane, Sheffield on 5 March 1867 and attracted 3,000 spectators, each paying 3d admission. The game used the concept of ‘rouges’ (a rouge was scored when an attempt at goal, using a goal only 4 yards wide, missed, but would have gone into an 8 yard wide goal: rouges were only considered in the case of a drawn match), and Hallam beat Norfolk and Mackenzie to finish first, while Norfolk beat Mackenzie and finished second. The Runners-up were presented with a two-handed silver goblet encircled with athletic figures that had been purchased with the proceeds of the gate money and had been completed. Sadly Youdan was unable to present it personally as he was ill.

1870 AD – The first International England was home to the first ever international football match on the 5 March 1870. The first match ended in a draw and was one of a series of four matches between representatives of England and Scotland at The Oval, London. These matches were arranged by the Football Association, at the time the only national football body in the world.

The origin of these games came in 1870 when CW Alcock challenged homegrown contenders in Scotland against an English eleven. These challenges were issued in Scottish newspapers, including the Glasgow Herald. He received no response to these adverts. One response to Alcock’s challenges illustrates that soccer was eclipsed in Scotland by other codes:

“Mr Alcock’s challenge to meet a Scotch eleven on the borders sounds very well and is doubtless well meant. But it may not be generally well known that Mr Alcock is a very leading supporter of what is called the “association game”…devotees of the “association” rules will find no foemen worthy of their steel in Scotland”.

As a result he was forced to draw upon London-based players with Scottish origins. One notable Scottish player of the 1870 and 1871 games was Smith, a player of Queensn Park FC. This suggests that southern teams were not so isolated from Glasgow players and style of play as originally thought. Alcock was categorical that although most players were London based, this was due to lack of response from north of the border:

“I must join issue with your correspondent in some instances. First, I assert that of whatever the Scotch eleven may have been composed the right to play was open to every Scotchman [Alcock's italics] whether his lines were cast North or South of the Tweed and that if in the face of the invitations publicly given through the columns of leading journals of Scotland the representative eleven consisted chiefly of Anglo-Scotians … the fault lies on the heads of the players of the north, not on the management who sought the services of all alike impartially. To call the team London Scotchmen contributes nothing. The match was, as announced, to all intents and purposes between England and Scotland”. The first official ( i.e. Currently recognised by FIFA) international match would take place between Scotland and England on November 30th. 1872. This match was played under the Football Association rules.

1871 AD – The F.A.Cup The F.A. Cup was the first nationally organized competition. A knockout cup, it began 1871, with the first winners being the Wanderers. In those days professionalism was banned, and the cup was dominated by service teams or old schoolboys’ teams (such as Old Etonians). In the early 1870s the modern team passing game was invented by the Sheffield FC, Royal Engineers A.F.C. and Scottish players of the era from Queens Park FC. This was the predecessor to the current passing, defensive game which was known as the Combination Game and was spread around the world by British expatriates.

1888 AD – Worlds First Football League The new professionals needed more regular competitive football in which they could compete, which led to the creation of the Football league in 1888 by Aston Villa director William McGregor . This was dominated by those clubs who had supported professionalism, and the twelve founding members consisted of six from Lancashire (Blackburn Rovers, Burnely, Bolton Wanderers, Accrington, Everton and preston North End) and six from the Midlands (Aston Villa, Derby County, Notts County, Stoke, West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers). No sides from the South or London initially participated.

Preston North End won the first ever Football League championship without losing any of their 22 fixtures, and won the FA Cup to complete the double. They retained their league title the following year but by the turn of the 20th century they had been eclipsed by Aston Villa, who had emulated Preston’s double success in 1897. Other Midlands sides, such as Wolves (1893 FA Cup winners) and West Bromwich Albion (1888 & 1892 FA Cup winners) were also successful during this era, as were Blackburn Rovers, who won five FA Cups in the 1880s and 1890s. In 1892 a second division was added and in 1920 a third division was added.

1891 AD – Creation of Football Net In 1891 Liverpool engineer John Alexander Brodie invented the football net.

1991- Present In 1991 the English Premier league was formed of 20 clubs and with its links to Sky television and the increase in revenues by 2001 The Premier league was the richest league of any kind of sports in the world. At the present day, the league’s TV rights have reached over 2 Billion Pounds. The argument at present is when will technology be used around the goal to confirm problem goals by Video replay.

It always amazes me how from a little Island like England we created and gave the world over 100 sports and games that have dominated the world.

Football Shirt Showing Loyalty in style

Arsenal Football Team are located at The Emirates Stadium in Holloway in North London. Arsenal Football Club have played football there since July 2006.

Sporting football shirts bearing the legend of one’s favorite football club is not just a means of revealing one’s allegiance. It is also a subtle statement of cool and chic. And market savvy football clubs have been, predictably, quick to cash in on the current football shirt culture fad. Clubs, more specifically club names, have become ace branding agents. Small wonder that most retro shirts cost nothing less than USD 51 or £ 35. And there is a mad rush for them.

Things were not always so. In the good old day of modern football in England football gear was pretty conventional. Believe it or not, but players would be seen in shirt, suit, and tie!  And some would appear in home-knitted caps. Some footballers, with a wry sense of humor obviously, would concede to wearuing a rosette on their chests.

Even as the game continued to gain popularity there was little fans could do by way of showing off their team allegiance. When footballers started earning their stripes they began to settle for colors, but in heavy cotton wear. Today’s players wear polyester, nylon or light cotton with jazzy designs and colors. Which makes it so much easier on their fans who lustily cheer them in sweltering hot weather sometimes.

Businesses have been quick to jump on to the football shirt bandwagon taking advantage of the culture of teams brands. Let it be said, though, that most football fans frown upon the idea of having to sport corporate logos while demonstrating affiliation to their favorite teams.

As we said earlier, football shirts also make a great fashion statement. The England football shirts, for instance, are the current rage amongst fans. They are dignified, regal, and easy on the eye. Take the Arsenal away shirt for instance. At £49.99 this genial ochre chemise with a round collar and red stripes on each sleeve looks rather becoming. The cheery red 2008-09 Arsenal home shirt (Adebayor 25) too, looks rather fetching as well and comes in all sizes. Good for Arsenal affiliates, surely, as it reminds them of the great Premier League and First Division wins and titles.

Or, if you are a Togo fan, you might simply dig this lemon and lime shirt with seaweed green piping on the collar and a similar color highlighting the ripe golden in a happy contrast. To be featured in the 2010 World Cup during the qualifying campaign this is surely a home shirt ‘To Go’ with Togo.

Manufactured by Puma (the Arsenal shirts have been manufactured by Nike) the Togo away football shirts look just as cool and dignified in beige green with logos manifested just below the shoulders and neck. This gorgeous brand is available at a rather cool price- £44.99.

And, of course, how can anyone miss out on the England World Cup shirts, particularly away shirts? The short-sleeved 2010-11 England away football shirt looks dazzling in ruby red. The sleeves are subtly highlighted in slim white piping.

All these England football shirts are available in great hues and all sizes. Time for a trial, what say?

Mike Greaves is a self-made entrepreneur, a well known sports shirts consultant and internet marketer. Over the years he has football shirt across the world and has numerous writings credited to his name in many renowned publications. His areas of writing include sports shirts experiences including reviews of Football shirts and england football shirt

Can anyone explain why an Arsenal football chant there is a lyric (AND LEICESTER) ?

The song is called “We all follow the Arsenal”

we all follow the arsenal
over land and sea (and leicester)
we all the arsenal
on to victory

The Manchester United cult hero

Man Utd play at Old Trafford Stadium in the Trafford Borough of Greater Manchester. Man Utd have played there since 1910.

“The only thing I have in common with George Best is that we come from the same place, play for the same club and were discovered by the same man”

Norman Whiteside

When people hear the mention of the Shankill Road in Belfast, they would probably think of a place where angels fear to thread. Nonetheless, being located next to the city centre the Shankill has now been turned into a busy shopping community. As there are over 100 smaller retail merchants on the road in Shankill, even holidaymakers are a common sight these days.

Brought up on the Shankill Road in Belfast, Norman Whiteside was discovered by none other than Bob Bishop, who previously recommended George Best and Sammy McIlroy to the Old Trafford club. Whiteside achieved legendary status when he became the youngest player ever to score in a FA Cup final as Manchester United beat Brighton and Hove Albion 4-0 in the 1983 replay.

Despite being converted into a midfield player, he also scored the winning goal in the 1985 FA Cup final to give Manchester United victory over Everton. Referee Peter Willis also managed to hit the newspaper headlines on this warm London afternoon as Kevin Moran became the first player to be sent off in an FA Cup final following his sort of hopeless challenge on Everton midfielder Peter Reid.

Even though they were down to ten players, Manchester United nevertheless fancied their chances as the game entered extra time. Moreover, the Manchester United players just went on fighting even harder as they became progressively determined to give the Evertonians the coup de grace.

With 110 minutes on the clock, Norman Whiteside suddenly cut in from the right wing and hit a sensational curling shot past a fully stretched Neville Southall from 25 yards. It was a moment of pure and simple magic from Whiteside as he scored the only goal of the match bringing FA Cup glory to the Old Trafford club once again.

Norman Whiteside went on to make 273 appearances for Manchester United scoring a total of 66goals in the process. Troubled by a knee injury, he was eventually sold to Everton in 1989 for £600,000. A regular member of the vastly talented Northern Ireland team that went to the 1982 and 1986 World Cups, Whiteside won 38  full caps for his country.

When injury finished his playing career at the comparatively young age of 26, Whiteside went to become a podiatrist and he now works at the Professional Footballers’ Association.

United Blog Articles is a website dedicated to Manchester  United. Soccer is undoubtly the most accepted sport in the world. And it is most  likely no more than fair to say that Manchester United is the most popular club  world wide. Read supplementary articles on Norman Whiteside at United Blog  Articles.

Manchester United What Prospects For 2009/10

Manchester United home is in the Trafford Borough of Greater Manchester. Manchester United have played football there since 1910.

There are many reasons why Manchester United are the most successful football team in England – and have been for as long as most people can remember. And especially since the development of the Premier League, the club has entered an era of almost unprecedented success.

The Old Trafford Stadium keeps expanding – its current capacity is over 76,000 – and the demand for tickets shows no sign of slowing down, despite the economic downturn.

Much has been made, quite rightly, of the influence over the club of the legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson. A blunt, at times irascible Scotsman, Ferguson has been at ‘The Theatre of Dreams’ since November, 1986 – a tenure almost unprecedented in any era of the game. He has managed to stay hungry, determined and, most importantly, in total command during that time and will, when he does eventually decide to stand down, undoubtedly be hard to replace.

Ferguson’s main attribute, for me, has been to keep United at the top whilst continually changing his team. There has been one spell – between 2002 and 2005 – when the club ‘only’ had an FA Cup to display from the major competitions; but even then they could hardly be said to have languished in mediocrity.

The manager has had that priceless ability of being able to move players in and out of his squad, without it disrupting team spirit or damaging the pattern of play. Additionally, he’s shown a completely single-minded approach to moving out players he thought would be possibly past their best or simply not up to standard. Yes, he’s made a few mistakes – Kleberson, Veron, Taibi, Djemba Djemba, Jordi Cruyff – but some of those could realistically have been expected to have been successful. Kleberson was the midfield hub of a Brazilian team that won the World Cup, for goodness sake.

However, I do happen to think that Sir Alex has a hard season in prospect. Not one where United are in danger of plummeting down to fifth, or anything like that. But I do feel things could be a little more problematic when it comes to running away with the league title again.

Now, I’m not just saying that because Ronaldo has flown away to his spiritual home – I’m sure they’ll suit each other perfectly. Although a player of his skill – and the number of goals he scored – will not easily be found, it’s certain the staff at Old Trafford will bring at least one player in to take the winker’s place.

My problems are elsewhere. I do think there are a number of players who are just about past their use-by date. Ryan Giggs might have been PFA Player of the Year but we all know that was a sentimental award – unless he really was exceptional in the 15 league games he started during the season! Clearly, Giggs, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes cannot be expected to play much next season.

Then there are others about whom you can’t be really sure they’re going to be quite good enough. Darren Fletcher has come on enormously in the last two years but the same can’t really be said for Nani, Anderson, Ji-Sung Park and one or two more. It was abundantly clear in the Champions’ League Final that Barcelona’s midfield was inordinately superior to Manchester’s. Owen Hargreaves, hopefully for United, will return to something like his best form – but Michael Carrick still looks a bit of a ‘flat track bully’ to me,

And, of course, there are the classic Berbatov and Rooney problems. I don’t suppose I’m alone in wondering what on earth Wayne Rooney was doing spending half of last season stuck out on the left ‘doing a job for the team’ and looking a shadow of the player we all think he could be. And the manager’s faith in the expensive Berbatov was clearly demonstrated in the last few vital matches of the season when the player barely got picked. Personally, for all Tevez’s enthusiasm and running around, the best pairing up front for Manchester United has to be the intelligence of Berbatov – who did have more ‘assists’ than any other United player last year – with the brilliant Rooney playing in his best position alongside him.

I am looking forward to the 2009/2010 season in the Premier League. Manchester United can be sure of playing their fast, flowing football and will, of course, be right there at the end. I do think, though, that, if they are going to achieve the amazing feat of four titles in a row, the manager has got quite a lot of hard work to do.

Which is the best way to get Manchester United tickets for a single match?

I am a massive Manchester United fan, living in america. My dad has offered to take me to the Liverpool game on March 22 as a present for my graduation from high school and acceptance to university. What is the best way to get tickets, through OneUnited or is there a better way? Also, where would be the best place to get seats?

Answer
good luck, they are like gold dust!! Here in England it is virtually impossible to get them but give it a go. You usually have to ring the ticket line at Uniteds ground if you are not a registered fan. Its on a first come first served basis and the phones are constantly engaged. As they are playing Liverpool it will lessen your chances even more. From the moment tickets go on sale they are virtually sold out

Sorry to sound do bad but its better forewarning you. Im a Liverpool fan and have been since a little girl and I cant get tickets to watch them!

Why Chelsea Will Become English Premier League Champions In 2010

Chelsea Football Team are located at Stamford Bridge Stadium in West London. Chelsea Football Team have played there since April 1887.

With each season that has passed since the departure of Jose Mourinho, there is a growing desperation within Chelsea to taste the sweet success of being English Premier League champions again. This season has the club welcoming their fourth manager in three seasons with Carlo Ancelotti. The Italian moved from AC Milan to Chelsea over the summer and has been tasked with restoring glory to the club not experienced since their Portuguese coach left under acrimonious circumstances. With half the season played, Ancelotti appears to be doing a fine job. Chelsea continues to lead at the top of the Premier League and there are a few key reasons why they could remain there come the end of the season.

1. The manager Carlo Ancelotti.
Without a doubt, teams that have become champions over the years have had one similar trait and that is the presence of a great manager. Carlo Ancelotti has already proven himself both in Italy and Europe as a whole. Once dubbed the nearly man in Italian football, Ancelotti went on to win all the honours available domestically and internationally with AC Milan. It is this same resume on which Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich chose to hire him to lead the club after previous manager Guus Hiddink left.

2. Flourishing strike partners
Chelsea used to play with only one striker upfront. That was the system that Mourinho implemented during his reign and found great success with. Subsequent coaches came and tried to impose their own ideals without success. It was not until Ancelotti came in that the team now plays with a more conventional two strikers upfront, with great results to show for it. The Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba has struck up a strong partnership with Frenchman Nicolas Anelka with both hitting double digits at this stage of the season. There is no doubt that if both players remain fit and available, they will fire the club to the title.

3. John Terry scandal
Many are expecting the scandal that John Terry has found himself in to cause friction in the squad and also lead to unwanted distraction in the title chase. However, most of the players have been reported to be supportive of the defender. Terry is well known for being a mentor for other players in terms of their fortunes on the pitch. That gesture could be returning to him in kind in a positive manner. The opposite individual involved in the scandal is also not a part of Chelsea. The whole situation could lead to an even more united team at Stamford Bridge which could translate to even better performances on the field.

There are many possible reasons why Chelsea should top the Premier League at the end of May, but the above three are the most important of them all. Rarely would a team enjoy a trouble-free season on their way to success and it is often the most difficult situations that would turn them into an indomitable side. Chelsea are now coincidentally going through such a period and with strong mental character, a return to being English football champions is within reach.

Kerry Bates is a lifelong Chelsea FC supporter. He is maintaining a Chelsea FC blog that provides cutting edge views on the latest happenings at the English Premier League club. Find out more about his thoughts on the John Terry scandal by visiting his site.

Manchester united?

Manchester united are without doubt the most successful team in the last 20 years. can we carry this on and not fade away like Liverpool have. If yes how?
You cant win anything without spending some money and lets face it only Arsenal and Utd hold some credability of winning the league without blatantly buying it unlike Blackburn and Chel$ki

Answer
Speaking as a Liverpool fan, the big challenge is replacing a successful manager. Sir Alex Ferguson isn’t going to last forever. The rot set in for Liverpool when the old Boot Room of Paisley, Fagin then Moran left. They all just got old at the same time. Dalglish’s success was a false dawn. Souness ruined them.
Unless United start looking for an able successor to Sir Alex now, the writing is on the wall. My own money would be on Mark Hughes, but I don’t think he is ready for a really big job for another 5 – 10 years.
The old truth that everyone ends up rubbish in the end is sadly true.

How to Enjoy your Trip to Arsenal and Find Accommodation Near Emirates Stadium

Arsenal are located at The Emirates Stadium in Holloway in North London. Arsenal Football Club have played there since July 2006.

There are not many football grounds that are as easy and as accessible as the Emirates Stadium, especially if you want to have fun and a couple of pints. Visitors should not drive to Arsenal games as there is no parking and roads around the stadium are closed. However, this is good news as it allows you to use public transport and enjoy your time without the worries of a drive home. If you decide it is necessary to drive you may want to park on the edge of London and complete your journey by public transport. The ground itself is served by three tube stations: Highbury and Islington (Victoria Line), Arsenal (Piccadilly Line) and Finsbury Park (Victoria and Piccadilly lines). Unfortunately nearby Holloway Road station is closed on match days as it does not have an escalator.

Many people want to find Hotels near Emirates Stadium, however, it is not recommended staying too near the ground, as there is very little to do. Islington’s trendy Upper Street is a far more suitable place to stay as it is packed with bars and restaurants and has many hotels nearby including the Hilton on Upper Street and Jury’s Inn on Pentonville Road (book cheap match day hotels at the www.matchotels.com website).

The other option is to find Hotels in Central London, the Emirates stadium is a short tube journey from Central London and the West End and can be easily reached on either the Victoria or Piccadilly lines after the game. Fans who wish to stay more centrally have many options. London’s West End has a fantastic nightlife and offers a wide range of accommodation from the famous Ritz hotel on Piccadilly down to the lesser known Classic hotel near Hyde Park. Also London’s South Bank offers galleries and riverside accommodation; or try Paddington for cheap London hotels.

Once at the stadium you may want to eat, there are many fast food facilities around the stadium with a variety of options, ranging from your typical hot dog stand to a Crepe stall. Inside the Emirates stadium the food is pricey but does cover a wide range of products, again though it is advised to eat outside the stadium due to the high prices.

An enjoyable part of the day is having a couple of pints in the pub and there are many bars around the stadium to choose from with the Drayton Arms next to Drayton Park Station being the traditional away supporter’s pub. It is also possible to drink inside the stadium where it is only £2.50 for a pint of lager before and after the match (£3.20 at half time). Tea and coffee will cost you £1.70 and a soft drink £2.00.

If you would like buy a programme or a fanzine you can get them outside Emirates stadium and an official programme cost £3, The Gooner fanzine is £2 and Up The Arse fanzine is £1.

AFTER THE MATCH if you would like to find a place for Eating/Drinking, there are literally hundreds of places to choose from around London’s West End. However if you wish to wine and dine closer to the stadium, take a walk to nearby Upper Street (Highbury and Islington station). Here you will find many bars and restaurants ideal for a night out.

If you are looking for Entertainment, again the West End is an option as it is inundated with bars, pubs, cinemas and nightclubs. Madame Tussauds and the London Eye are top London tourist attractions as are Big Ben, Tower of London and the Houses of Parliament.

If Central London is not your scene then Walthamstow Dog Track is an enjoyable evening that is not too far from Emirates Stadium and can be easily reached by public transport.

What do you think about the queen supporting Arsenal Football Team?

Its just been announced on the radio, you comments please.

Answer
It figures, seeing how the Queen Mum was an Arsenal supporter. They are the greatest football team in the world after all.

With this in mind…how can you speak ill of Arsenal? They’ve been annointed by the Queen…that would be treason! And you wouldn’t want to be hung for treason, would you?

Liverpool Guest Houses

Liverpool home is Anfield Football Ground in the city of Liverpool. Liverpool have played football there since 1892.

Liverpool B&B’s and guest houses are just the places to stay if you are visiting Liverpool to check out the legendary Beatles or, for that matter, Gerry and the Pacemakers or Billy Fury.

But there’s more to Liverpool than the memory of the culture or imagery of that time when Liverpool was known around the world for the sounds of the sixties!

There are, for example, some of the best galleries and museums of any major city anywhere in the world outside of capital cities.

There are plenty of listed buildings to see, more in fact, than anywhere outside London and the architecture is certainly world-class.

There are loads of things to do in Liverpool and the choice is quite staggering, with sport, arts, culture, theatres, shopping and the waterfront to enjoy.

The shopping experience deserves a trip in it’s own right so if you are up for a bit of retail therapy, Liverpool has it in abundance. Plenty of stores and fashionable boutiques to tempt you so prepare your credit or debit card for some strenuous shopping trips!

Your days out should include visits to the Mersey Coast and countryside to admire some of the beautiful parks and gardens where you can see, amongst many other things, the endangered Red Squirrel. The largest herd of African elephants in the UK is at Knowsley Safari Park. If time permits, you could plan a short stay or weekend break at a bed and breakfast or guest house in this area to do it justice.

Liverpool is not just about music and football! The area actually includes green fields and woodlands, too, so if you want to combine the excitement of a modern city with the delights of the countryside, the Liverpool region is the place for you.

It’s impossible to talk about this part of Britain without mentioning football because two of the best known teams in the world have their grounds just a few minutes from the centre of Liverpool.

The first official Grand National was run in 1839 and today it’s held at Aintree (long before the Beatles were even a twinkle!) and known as the toughest horse race in the world. Liverpool bed and breakfasts can be found within a mile or two of the race course at Aintree. Racing is also held at Haydock Park where flat and jumping fixtures are scheduled throughout the year.

When it comes to eating out in Liverpool, you will again be spoiled for choice! The diversity of the type of food available is quite amazing with a diversity of food that does the city proud. If you want traditional British food or afternoon tea you will not be disappointed but food from other countries is also available with cooking from the Caribbean, China, India, Italy and France to delight your pallet.

If, at the end of your stay, you still have not found anything to do with the Beatles, or if you have not actually walked over Penny Lane zebra crossing, perhaps you should return to Liverpool before long and experience some of the pop culture the city is still best known for!!

Guest House Rooms provides bed and breakfast accommodation in guest houses in Liverpool.

Manchester United And The Theatre Of Dreams

Man Utd Football Team are located at in the Trafford Borough of Greater Manchester. Man Utd Football Team have played football there since 1910.

26 May, 1999. Perhaps not a date etched in the minds of many people, but for followers of Manchester United, it was the day history was made.

With the English Premier League title already in the bag, secured on the final day of the league season in a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur, and the FA Cup on board too thanks to a 2-0 cup final victory over Newcastle United, the final Wednesday of May ’99 was when Manchester United could secure the much coveted treble.

The UEFA Champions League (formerly known as the European Cup) is where the European footballing elite battle it out every year for one of the sport’s major prizes. Manchester United hadn’t won Europe’s top football trophy in decades, so winning the 1999 final was special enough in itself. The manner in which they did it was extra special.

One-nil down against Bayern Munich in injury time in front of some 90,000 fans, and the game is all but over. But hold on, up pop Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to score two goals late on for Manchester United and achieve what was, and still is, the most successful season in English football history.

Manchester United won the top European trophy again in 2008, beating Chelsea in the final. They reached the final again the following year, however on this occasion, they lost to Barcelona.

Nevertheless, ‘The Red Devils’, as United are colloquially known, are one of the most decorated clubs in history. Moreover, not only are they the richest club in football, they are the richest and most valuable club in any sport across the globe, with their total worth well exceeding the billion pound mark.

Though tickets for a Manchester United Premier League match are like gold dust, anyone visiting this city could time their trip to coincide with an FA Cup or League Cup match, as tickets are more readily available for games not covered by season tickets. In a stadium that can accommodate around 80,000 spectators, there’s a good chance of a ticket being available for one of the earlier-round matches.

Even for those not able to make it to a match, the stadium is still worth a visit. Known as the ‘Theatre of Dreams’, Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium has a five-star rating by UEFA and is the only football stadium in the UK to hold this status. The club’s illustrious past is on show in the museum through an impressive array of trophies and photos, whilst visitors also get the chance to walk through the players’ tunnel and marvel at the ground from the sidelines.

The whole of the city is a footballing Mecca, with its neighbours Manchester City among the wealthiest clubs in the world, although their success is a little more stifled. If you time your trip well and book a Manchester hotel in a prime location, then you’re sure to have a fantastic time in this great city, home to one of the world’s most famous football clubs.

Trading Talk – Football Premier League

Chelsea Football Team play at Stamford Bridge Stadium in West London. Chelsea Football Team have played football there since April 1887.

Chelsea extended their lead at the top, after Manchester United slipped up at Everton and the Carlo Ancelotti’s side made the most of their chances at Molineux. Spread bettors that have bought Chelsea’s outright championship spread, at 53pts, (60pts to the winner, 40pts to runner-up, 30pts to third-place, and 20pts for fourth etc) will now be sitting far more comfortably. Once again there’s plenty for spread punters to get stuck into this weekend, including Chelsea’s match against Manchester City, Arsenal’s trip to the Britannia Stadium and Tottenham versus Everton.

Spread bettors debating whether to take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge will need to think carefully before laying their hard-earned on the line. City have not beaten the Blues on their own turf since the inaugural Premier League season and buyers of Chelsea’s win index will also be pleased to learn that City have not even managed to score at the Bridge since a 2-1 defeat in 2000. However, City’s win index spread buyers will point to this season’s win at Eastlands for confidence, as the side fought back from a goal down.

Those interested in buying Chelsea’s supremacy spread will have noted that the Blues have picked up some impressive home wins over City in recent years. The most notable came in 2007, when Chelsea smashed six past their opponents without reply. City did themselves justice last season though, after a lone Michael Essien goal separated the sides. Total goal buyers will be hoping for a repeat of the 6-0 thrashing, but spread bettors looking to sell will be banking on a repeat of the 0-0 in 2005.

Arsenal have struggled at Stoke since the Potters’ arrival in the top flight, having been defeated in both trips to the Britannia. Buyers of Stoke’s win index will be aware of their success earlier this season against the Gunners, although the 3-1 win came in the FA Cup. But the Gunners’ form has been strong in their last six away leagues games, which will offer encouragement for supremacy spread buyers. Wenger’s side have only been beaten once in six on the road, while they have picked up three wins.

Games between these two sides have not caused the referee much trouble. Spread punters looking to sell the bookings market will have seen that the last two games have not produced a single card and the previous game saw just 10 points on the spread make-up. Spread buyers will quickly highlight the first meeting in the Premier League between the sides, which accumulated 85 points when Robin van Persie saw red after making an eleven minute cameo.

Everton’s form has seen them develop into a late runner for the European race, and their game at Tottenham should make pulsating viewing for the spread betting masses. They’ve met twice this campaign already, with Tottenham winning in the Cup and a 2-2 draw in the league. Spread buyers of Everton’s win index will be happy to learn that the side have a great record at White Hart Lane with three wins from their three previous league visits.

How your Child Has Been Coached Out of Being a Great Footballer

Arsenal Football Club now play at The Emirates Stadium in Holloway in North London. Arsenal Football Team have played there since July 2006.

It is possible that your child has within them the natural attributes to become a great player. If they display promise at an early age they may want to start playing for a local club…where their expert staff will crush their spirit, retard their technical development, subvert their instincts and suck all the joy out of playing the game to such an extent that your child may want to give up football altogether.

A little dramatic perhaps, but the way football is approached at youth level has damaged generations of players, meaning any technically competent English player carried an inflated price tag, resulting inevitably in the massive influx of foreign players and ultimately to the dismal failure of the national team. As a footballing nation, England appears to have stopped developing since winning the World Cup in 1966, believing in their divine right to win simply because they gave the game to the world and won the World Cup forty years ago, while more modest, forward thinking nations like Korea, Ivory Coast and Croatia have begun to bloom and at the current rate of progress will soon outstrip the stubbornly ignorant attitude within English coaching circles. English players now lag embarrassingly behind their European, Latin American and African counterparts in skill and technique. Is it any wonder then that the one English team that plays stylish technical football, Arsene Wenger’s North London powerhouse Arsenal, rarely has an English player in its starting eleven?

So, that is the problem, it’s acknowledged and frequently mentioned by all sides, both in England and with great glee abroad, but what is the solution? One man thinks he knows the answer, another legend of (North East) London football, Sir Trevor Brooking. His mission is to overhaul the English coaching philosophy which has stagnated generations of promising young players, and somehow move coaches and managers away from the traditional unsubtle hoof and clog style of football that is still endemic at every level from the national team through the lower leagues, which are still largely populated by home grown talent, to park football.

While many English managers and ex-players berate clubs such as South London spendthrifts Chelsea and their North London rivals Arsenal for packing not just their first teams, but their reserve and youth teams with imported talent Brooking sympathises: ‘Clubs have scouting networks all over Europe and the world and the funding to bring young players here,’ he says. ‘To be honest, I don’t blame them. At the moment children join their academies at nine. We should target them before that and ensure that they have already encountered a far better quality of coaches.’

He continues expanding on his vision with refreshing candour: ‘We also need to change what is being coached. Let’s have more small-sided games so that they have more ball time. Let’s allow them to have fun, take away the importance of winning and stop the young players being afraid of making mistakes. Concentrate on first touch and technique, allow that a short pass can often be more of a killer ball than the big hoof up to the centre-forward.’ Under the Brooking plan English football could finally move away from its current simplistic, caricatured form, where especially at youth level coaches seek out a group of ‘big lads’ pump them up and set them to crunching their way through whatever opposition is put in their way, rather than enjoying the game and trying to play. It is often noticeable that English youth teams are significantly bigger than their foreign counterparts and this is because many have been chosen for their advanced physical development rather than any talent for football they may have shown, however, when they reach full maturity many of them fall by the wayside.

Brooking also takes time to specifically address one of the major concerns those familiar with youth football frequently express – that of overly aggressive, over vocal parents coaching and abusing players from the sidelines: ‘Any parents who are too enthusiastic should, as a last resort, be removed,’ he says ominously.

And what if English football doesn’t embrace Brooking’s plan, what will happen to all the young English players? Sir Trevor thinks their future could be bleak: ‘If we don’t do all these things then even the kids identified as elite, when they join academies at nine, will still be starting behind. By the time they are competing at sixteen with a foreign youngster they have even less chance of being taken on.’
