At the moment children join their academies at nine. We should target them before that and ensure that they have already encountered a far better quality of coaches.’

He continues expanding on his vision with refreshing candour: ‘We also need to change what is being coached. Let’s have more small-sided games so that they have more ball time. Let’s allow them to have fun, take away the importance of winning and stop the young players being afraid of making mistakes. Concentrate on first touch and technique, allow that a short pass can often be more of a killer ball than the big hoof up to the centre-forward.’ Under the Brooking plan English football could finally move away from its current simplistic, caricatured form, where especially at youth level coaches seek out a group of ‘big lads’ pump them up and set them to crunching their way through whatever opposition is put in their way, rather than enjoying the game and trying to play. It is often noticeable that English youth teams are significantly bigger than their foreign counterparts and this is because many have been chosen for their advanced physical development rather than any talent for football they may have shown, however, when they reach full maturity many of them fall by the wayside.

Brooking also takes time to specifically address one of the major concerns those familiar with youth football frequently express – that of overly aggressive, over vocal parents coaching and abusing players from the sidelines: ‘Any parents who are too enthusiastic should, as a last resort, be removed,’ he says ominously.

And what if English football doesn’t embrace Brooking’s plan, what will happen to all the young English players? Sir Trevor thinks their future could be bleak: ‘If we don’t do all these things then even the kids identified as elite, when they join academies at nine, will still be starting behind. By the time they are competing at sixteen with a foreign youngster they have even less chance of being taken on.’

Like numerous Football Clubs up and down the country, Tottenham Hotspur’s foundations originate in the School and Cricket paternity. The “Hotspur” is believed to be linked to a gentleman named Sir Henry Percy alias Harry Hotspur who existed in the 1500’s and whose descendants were quite wealthy landowners. “Hotspur Football Club”, as it was known became “Tottenham Hotspur Football and Athletic Club”, in 1884 to stop the confusion and also to have a more unique name than that of a similar local club that went by the title of “London Hotspur”

Their first ground so to speak was the Tottenham Marshes in Greater London, a natural wetland. They then shifted to Northumberland Park in 1888, a location more suitable for spectators and where they could charge gate fees. A set back for Tottenham was when they received no votes which would of allowed them to join the Southern League. This was reversed when in 1895, the Club turned professional and Spurs started to attract bigger crowds at games and with this, a bigger venue was required, so in 1899 the Club moved to their new ground at High Road which is now the famous White Hart Lane which as brought many football gifts to fans.

A great achievement for Tottenham Hotspur was in 1901 when they won the FA Cup and in doing so were and still are the only non-League club to have lifted that trophy, which was presented to Spurs Captain Jack Jones. It was at this presentation that ribbons were tied to the Cup by a Spurs Directors wife and that is where the tradition of ribbons on the FA Cup originates.

In the 1908/09 season, Tottenham was elected to participate in Division 2 of the Football League and in the same season won promotion as runners up to Division 1. The Clubs high hopes were soon watered down as they found themselves overwhelmed with stronger Clubs and in 1914/15 when football was suspended due to WWI Spurs found themselves at the bottom of the League.

After the War in 1919 and with more Clubs turning professional and wanting to join the Football League additional places were allocated and in doing so, the League added two extra Clubs making the total number of Clubs in the League 1 now 22 from 20. There was already a degree of hostility with Arsenal after they moved ground to Tottenham’s vicinity but what happened after the War added insult to injury. The Two extra places in League 1 went to Chelsea who finished 19th and the other should naturally of been Tottenham who had finished in 20th place, but Arsenal who had finished in 6th position in League 2 were somehow promoted to Division 1. Even more amazingly, this decision was not over ruled and Arsenal FC stayed in Division 1 and Tottenham in Division 2. This opened up a wound for Spurs that even to this day has not been closed.

 Tottenham dug deep and at the end of 1919/20 season were crowned champions of Division 2 and went even one better the following year by winning the FA Cup for the second time beating Wolverhampton 1-0.

 After WW2, footballs popularity was ceaselessly increasing bringing masses to the weekend matches. In 1949 a born and bread Tottenham man and an ex player, Arthur Sydney Rowe became Manager of Spurs. Football gifts like Rowe remain timeless and his input and the strategy,”push and run”, he formed while at the Club are still seen in all Football Squads today. General like in his tactics he brought some thing special to Spurs and now they were going places. They Finishes in top position that same season Rowe took charge but there was more to come in the ensuing season, Division 1. Only losing seven games, they were comfortable leaders for the majority of the time and crowned champions with Manchester United runners up.

 Like all new methods of play, especially those that work and are successful, meant other Clubs were adopting and adapting Rowe’s, “push and run”, style. With this Tottenham ended the 1951/52 season a close second to a younger Man United squad. The 1952/53 season saw the Club in a mess finishing only 10th. Another mess which did contribute to this middle of the table result was the poor condition of the home pitch. Even for the low standards back then it was still considered disgraceful.

 If there was a man, who knew everything about Tottenham Hotspur FC it was Bill Nicholas. He had served the Club in every aspect upon leaving school and was given the opportunity to manage in 1958. In terms of football gifts Nicholas was another and stamped his authority on his opening game against Everton, thrashing them 10-4, making this a Spurs record at the time. There was optimism in the air once again and rightly so. Tottenham’s first 3 seasons with Nicholas’s guidance were a blast with them winning the Double in 1961 then reaching the FA Cup/European Cup semi finals in 1962. 1963 saw Spurs lift the Cup Winners Cup, and then they did have a quiet spell while Nicholas basically rebuilt the whole squad but then bounced back in 1967, beating Chelsea FC 2-1 in the FA Cup final at Wembley with Robertson and Saul the goal scorers. Spurs later added the League Cup in 1971 and the UEFA Cup in 1972 then the League Cup again in 1973. Before Nicholas resigned in 1974/75 season, he had accumulated 8 major trophies and Spurs had never tasted success to that degree.

 Tottenham Hotspur couldn’t have wished for a better start to the 80’s. Now with, Keith Burkinshaw in charge they beat Manchester City 3-2 to add another FA Cup to their collection and then did it again the following season against QPR. In 1984 with players like Gareth Brookes and Glenn Hoddle enthused Spurs to grab another major trophy, the UEFA Cup.  The mid and late 80’s did see Spurs have numerous chances but it always just seemed to elude them.

 In 1991 and under manager Terry Venables the club did have some success. With players like Paul Gascoigne and Gary Lineker the FA Cup was once more theirs. Largely though, Tottenham was really much the same as they were in the late 80’s but had an extra problem of financial security. Certain individuals like Sir Alan Sugar stepped in to curb the Clubs £20 million debt. In addition, that meant other individuals had to be sold off, one of these included England star Paul Gascoigne. The club was in better hands but still not producing the goods and after another poor season Sir Alan Sugar sold his hold on the Club to ENIC Sports PLC.

 Former Spurs player Glenn Hoddle took managers post in 2001 with big ideas to turn the Club around. In fairness he didn’t have a particularly bad opening season plus steered the squad to the League Cup final, but cracks started to appear in the relationships with certain players and these individuals began complaining about Hoddle methods or lack of them. Again with no good results taking shape he was sacked by the board in 2003/04.

 The most recent manager to date, Harry Redknapp, former manager of Portsmouth joined Tottenham 2008/09 season. With the Club in a serious position of relegation, Redknapp needed only wins for survival and got them. He had only been in charge for a couple of weeks but this saw Spurs move up the table and out of the danger zone and when the final whistle blew for end of season Spurs were mid table.

 For this season, lets hope we can get some more football gifts at white Hart Lane with that old Tottenham magic.

There have been some many fantastic Arsenal players down the years that it’s nigh on impossible to whittle it down to twelve or so greats. Nevertheless, we’ve given it a go. Here then is our list of Arsenal Legends, with apologies to some of the great players we’ve left out. (Current Arsenal players are not included).

Herbert Chapman

Position: Manager

Arsenal Career: 1925-1934

Arguably the greatest ever English manager, Chapman is credited with turning around the fortunes of both Huddersfield Town and Arsenal. He won two championships with each, and both teams went on to win a third title after his departure.

Chapman joined Arsenal in 1925 and transformed them into the dominant force in English football. He was responsible for signing many of the Arsenal legends on this list and won two titles and the FA Cup with the Gunners. Then, during the 1933-34 season, with Arsenal top of the league by 4 points, Chapman died suddenly from pneumonia. His Arsenal side would go on to win that year and would deliver 5 titles over the next decade.

But Chapman’s influence stretches beyond his impressive achievements on the pitch. He was responsible for introducing new tactics and training methods into the game, as well as innovations such as floodlights, the white ball and numbered shirts. He was also responsible for adding the now-famous white sleeves to Arsenal’s previous all-red shirts.   

Alex James

Position: Forward

Arsenal Career: 1929-1937

A skillful forward known for his excellent passing and ball-control, James joined Arsenal from Preston North End in 1929.

He was a key member of the dominant 1930′s side and, although his tally of 27 goals is meagre for a forward, he was a major supplier of goals for Lambert, Bastin, Hulme and Drake. He won 4 league titles and 2 FA Cups with Arsenal.

James retired from football in 1937 and went on to work as a journalist. The Arsenal legend died of cancer in 1953, aged just 51.

David Jack

Position:Forward / Midfielder

Arsenal Career: 1928-1934

Herbert Chapman signed Arsenal legend David Jack from Bolton for a then world-record transfer fee of £10 890. The forward was an immediate success at Highbury, finishing as top scorer in his first season.  

The following season he scored in the final as Arsenal won the FA Cup against Huddersfield, and the year after contributed 34 goals as they were crowned First Division champions.

He remained at Highbury until retirement in 1934 then moved into management with Southend United, and Middlesbrough.     

Cliff Bastin

Position: Winger

Arsenal Career: 1929-1946

Appearances: 396

Goals: 178

A prolific goalscorer from left wing, Bastin was spotted by Herbert Chapman while playing for Exeter City. Chapman signed him for Arsenal in 1929 and he remained at the club for the rest of his career.

He was a key member of the dominant 1930′s side, winning 5 league titles and 2 FA Cups, before the outbreak of WWII effectively ended his career at the age of just 27.

He remained Arsenal’s all-time leading scorer for over half a century until his record was surpassed by fellow Arsenal legends, Ian Wright and Thierry Henry.

Ted Drake

Position: Striker

Arsenal Career: 1934-1939

Drake moved to Arsenal from Southampton in March 1934 for £6,500. He scored on his league debut against Wolves, and continued to be a prolific goalscorer throughout a successful Arsenal career which brought him two league titles and two FA Cups.

A quick centre-forward with a fierce shot, he holds a number of Arsenal records including the most league goals in a season (42) and the most in a match, 7 vs Aston Villa.

Unfortunately his career was cut short by WWII and he retired shortly after the war due to a spinal injury.

After retirement he went into management and won the title with Chelsea in 1954-55, the first person to win the league as both a player and manager.  

Frank McLintock

Position: Defender

Arsenal Career: 1964-1973

Appearances:408

Goals:32  

Arsenal legend and double winning captain McLintock joined the club from Leicester City in 1964. He became club captain in 1967 under Bertie Mee and after losing two League Cup finals led the club to a European Fairs Cup win in 1970.

The following year Arsenal won the League and Cup double – only the second time it had been achieved since 1897. Another Wembley final followed in 1972, but the Gunners were beaten by Leeds.

McLintock moved to QPR in 1973, and helped them to a second-place finish in 1975-76. He retired in 1977 and had unsuccessful stints as a manager with Leicester City and Brentford.  

Bertie Mee

Position: Manager

Arsenal Career: 1966-1976

After his playing career was cut short by injury Bertie Mee joined the Army Medical Corps and trained as a physiotherapist. He spent 6 years in the military before leaving and working at several football clubs.

He joined Arsenal in 1960, and served the club as physiotherapist until 1966, when the club surprisingly asked him to become manager after the sacking of Billy Wright.

Mee was so concerned as his ability to cope with the new role that he asked for a get out clause which would allow him to return to the role of physiotherapist if things didn’t work out.

He needn’t have worried, he remained club manager until 1976 and goes down in Arsenal legend as the first manager to deliver the League and Cup double.     

Mee was made an OBE in 1984 for services to football. He died in London in 2001, aged 82.

Charlie George

Position: Forward

Arsenal Career: 1969-1975

Appearances: 179

Goals: 49

An Arsenal fan as a boy, Charlie George went on to become an Arsenal legend and hero of the 1970-71 double-winning team.

He joined Arsenal in 1966, and after turning professional in 1969, made his debut in the first game of the 1969-70 season. A flamboyant support striker or attacking midfielder he was soon a regular in the first team, and a fans favourite.

However, he also had a rebellious streak and was often at odds with the club’s management.

He joined Derby County in 1975, spending 3 years at the Baseball Ground, during which time he won his one and only England cap.

George retired in 1983 and currently works for Arsenal.

Tony Adams

Position: Defender

Arsenal Career:1983-2002

Arsenal’s greatest ever captain? Four League titles, three FA Cups, two League cups, and the European Cup Winners Cup make a strong case and confirm Adams’ status as an Arsenal legend.

Signed as a schoolboy in 1980, Adams spent his entire 22 year playing career at Arsenal. He made his first team debut in 1983 as a raw 17 year old and over the next two seasons established himself as a regular. He was appointed captain in 1988 at the age of 21 and would remain club captain for 14 years.

Adams was a hugely influential figure at Arsenal but off the field he was fighting a battle with alcoholism. In 1990 he was jailed for 4 months after a drink driving incident and thereafter entered a program to deal with his addiction.

The arrival of Arsene Wenger as manager gave his career new impetus. Arsenal won two League and FA Cup doubles in 1997-98 and 2001-2002, making Adams the only man to have captained title-winning sides in three decades – a record unlikely to ever be beaten.

Adams retired from football in 2002 and has since turned his hand to coaching – with much less success than he enjoyed as a player.     

David Seaman

Position: Goalkeeper

Arsenal Career:1990-2004

Appearances: 564

Signed from Queens Park Rangers in 1990, Seaman was a mainstay of the successful Arsenal sides of the 90′s and early 2000′s.

He won three League titles, four FA Cups, the League Cup and European Cup Winners Cup in his time at Highbury and also established himself as England’s first choice keeper.  

Seaman was released by Arsenal in 2003 and joined Manchester City. However, he played only 19 times for City before a persistent shoulder injury forced his retirement.

Ian Wright

Position: Striker

Arsenal Career: 1991-1998

Appearances: 288

Goals:185

A relative late-comer to the professional game, Wright signed his first professional contract with Crystal Palace at the age of 22. He quickly formed a deadly strike partnership with Mark Bright and racked up 117 Palace goals before Arsenal signed him for a club record £2.5 million in 1991.

Wright scored a hat-trick on his Gunners debut and was the club’s highest scorer for the next six seasons. He was a major part of the club’s successes during the 90′s and in 1997 broke Arsenal legend Cliff Bastin’s goal-scoring record (Wright’s record has since been surpassed by Thierry Henry).

He left Arsenal in 1998 and had spells at West Ham, Notts Forest, Celtic and Burnley before retiring in 2000.

Dennis Bergkamp

Position: Forward

Arsenal Career: 1995-2006

Appearances:423

Arsenal legend Bergkamp was a product of Ajax’s famed academy and had a phenomenal scoring record with the Dutch giants, scoring 103 times in just 185 appearances.

This earned him a move to Internazionale in 1993, but his time in Italy was disappointing and he signed for Arsenal in 1995.

A classic deep-lying forward, he formed a great partnership with Ian Wright, but it was the arrival of Arsene Wenger at Highbury that really gave impetus to his Arsenal career.  

Arsenal won the double in 1997-98 and Bergkamp was voted PFA Player of the Season. They would go on to win another double in 2002, the FA Cup in 2003 and the Premier League again in 2004.

Bergkamp retired from football in 2006. He scored 120 goals in 424 Arsenal games and is credited with 166 assists.

Patrick Vieira

Position: Midfielder

Arsenal Career:1996-2005

Appearances: 407

An imposing and combative midfielder, Vieira signed from Milan in 1996 – incoming manager Arsene Wenger requesting his purchase prior to taking up the position.

Vieira adapted quickly to English football and was an integral part of the 97-98 double winning side, forming a formidable midfield partnership with French compatriot Emmanuel Petit.

After Tony Adams retirement in 2002 Vieira was named Arsenal captain and he led the side through their historic unbeaten season in 2003-04. That alone guarantees his status as an Arsenal legend.

His final trophy with Arsenal was the 2005 FA Cup, won on penalties against Manchester United.

He moved to Juventus in 2005 and has since played for Internazionale and Manchester City.

Thierry Henry

Position: Striker

Arsenal Career: 1999-2007

Appearances:370

Arsenal fans will tell you that he is the greatest player to have played for the club and it is difficult to disagree.

Henry joined the club in 1999 after an unsuccessful spell at Juventus. Arsene Wenger, who had previously managed him at Monaco, transformed him from a winger to a central striker, and despite a poor start – he failed to score in his first 8 games – the move soon paid dividends.

Over the next 8 seasons Henry would be the mainstay of the great Arsenal side that won two league titles and 3 FA Cups. He was Footballer of the Year in 2002-03 and 2003-04, and Premier League top scorer on 4 occasions.

Henry became Arsenal’s all-time record goalscorer in 2005, surpassing Ian Wright’s record. His Arsenal goal-scoring record stands at 226 in 370 appearances.

The Arsenal legend moved to Barcelona in 2007 for a fee of 24 million euros.

Now you got it correct (Arsenal United. Hehe… what a joke)!!! Yes. Arsenal plays good football but for me, I would say that the most entertaining line-up was during Patrick Vieira’s captaincy. They went without losing for 49 games and as I recall dominated the EPL at that season. That team just fired at will!!! And they were then true gunners!

Every season there is an almost audible buzz about what the new designs for football shirts will look like. Which team will look better? Which team will look worse? Will teams go with old fashioned shirts, or will they try new cutting edge designs? The speculation adds excitement to the preseason and keeps people guessing until the very last minute.

This year the most talked about new design is for Manchester United’s away shirt. Photos of their new shirts have been passed around the internet and they are not getting favorable reviews. The shirts are white with a large V pattern in red across the chest. With a lace-up top and the logo shoved off to the side of the V, these throwback shirts are being hailed as a design nightmare. Football fans are even joking that Manchester United players will all request transfers because of the hideous new shirt design.

There is also a psychological aspect to new designs for football shirts. For example, there are rumors that Arsenal plan to change their shirt colors from yellow to green this season. That change makes fans a little squeamish because the last time the Arsenal used green shirts they finished in a dismal 10th place. Unfortunately the Arsenal away shirts look more like something an official would wear with light pinstripes and a small ribbed collar.

Some of the new designs for football shirts this year show a strange robotech type of effect. The illusion of body armor is stitched into the shoulders and midriff of the new Chelsea shirts. The blue and white design is nice, but the addition of a zipper at the neckline seems unusual for a football shirt. This year’s Blackburn Rovers home shirt and Chelsea third shirt are brilliant examples of traditional football shirts. The Blackburn Rovers will wear a large blue and white checkerboard pattern trimmed with red, which is interesting while conservative. Chelsea’s third shirt is classic football with alternating light and dark blue stripes on the torso and dark blue sleeves. The bright yellow accents finish the design nicely.

The many different uniforms that football teams wear throughout the season can be a challenge when creating new designs for football shirts. The teams need home shirts, away shirts, and some have third shirts as well. The home and away shirts are strikingly different from one another, and no team would be satisfied to have just the same shirt in a different color. Each team strives for individuality, and sometimes creativity wins out over good taste.

Fans, however, will support their teams whatever design they wear. Even when a team’s new shirt design is horrid, you will find bleachers filled with rabid football fans that are proud to wear the same tasteless shirt their heroes wear on the field. New designs for football shirts add variety and interest to the game, and give fans something to look forward to every year as the season approaches. While the design of the uniform is not as important as the players who wear the uniforms, sometimes it can be just as interesting.

Also Everton obviously have Liverpool as their main rivals and Arsenal and Spurs are bitter rivals, not to mention any other London clubs.

After seeing how easy it was to find an Arsenal Shirt on the internet for my son’s birthday, i decided to see what other interesting football gifts were out there on the internet.

I had no idea exactly what i was looking for so i put into Google “Personalised Sports Gifts”, and was given “about” 76,100 results! (i love the way Google puts in that “about”!)

What a selection i was confonted with! Without even clicking on a link i could see a good range of articles on offer. T-Shirts, Mugs, Mouse-mats, Diaries, DVDs, Photos. It’s just incredible what is available nowadays via the internet.

Okay, well i had to make a decision on which website to look at, and i couldn’t really say no to Devoted to Sport because it looked like it had a wide range for me to look at. I’m obviously looking for a football gift, but this site has gifts for ANY sport. Cricket, Racing, F1, Rugby, Golf, Tennis and, of course, football, so i thought i have definitely arrived in the right place.

So i clicked over to the Football pages, and again i marvel at the massive choices in front of me. Calendars, T-Shirts and mugs printed to order, signed memorabilia, photo’s of stadiums and players, you can even buy shares in the club of your choice! But what drew my eye was the Personalised Football History Books, and i was just about to click when i saw a sign saying “Half Price on signed Football memorabilia” so i switched my attention, to see what really unusual gifts relating to Arsenal i could find. I wasn’t disappointed!

What about a signed photo of David Seaman for £60? Or David O’Leary for £65. More interesting for me was the signed photo’s of Thierry Henry, a true Arsenal legend. They had four choices of photo’s at £90. (You could get Hleb for £80, but i don’t think there will be many Arsenal fans queueing up for that one!)

But the last page brought up a couple of gems. There are two signed Away Shirts from the Arsenal double-winning year, one featuring John Radford’s signature, and the other was Charlie George. Oh memories are made of these!

I would have thought either of those was absolutely priceless, but they have been reduced to under £150. Now there is an Arsenal gift for the man who has everything! So now i know the next time i want an unusual gift i’ll just go straight to Devoted To Sport

With the benefit of hindsight, the Evening Standard headline writer who dreamt up the ‘Arsène Who?’ headline back in September, 1996 must feel pretty silly now.

There can be few football club managers anywhere in the world who are as identified with their team and their style of play as Arsenal’s Arsène Wenger. In a profession in which staying in a post for more than two years should qualify you for a testimonial match, the urbane Frenchman has now been at Arsenal for nearly 13 years. In any other country – that is one with no Sir Alex Ferguson in it – he would be by far the longest-serving manager.

During that time, Arsenal have won the Premier League on three occasions and the FA Cup four times – as well as twice reaching the Champions League final and being runner-up in the UEFA Cup. And, during the whole of his spell with the north London club, Wenger has produced teams that play football with real style sometimes breathtaking beauty.

Arsène Wenger belongs to that tradition of managers who were never great players and therefore took to coaching comparatively early in their lives. With degrees in both Engineering and Economics, and with fluency in Spanish and German as well as French and English, education was very much a priority for him as a young man and he didn’t become a professional with RC Strasbourg – his home town – until 1978, when he was 29 years old. He only played for the first team on twelve occasions – in their title winning season of 1978/79, including one match in the UEFA Cup.

Wenger’s first managerial post was with Nancy, when he was 34, and he followed this relatively unsuccessful stint by joining AS Monaco, ironically the team he made his first team debut against for Strasbourg, in 1987. It was here that his career really started to flourish – winning the French league in his first season (1988) and the cup in 1991. He also took players of the calibre of Glenn Hoddle, Jurgen Klinsmann and George Weah to play in the Principality. Always wanting to broaden his education and horizons, however, he then went over to the Japanese J League to manage Grampus Eight for an 18 month spell which brought the Emperor’s Cup to the club. In 1995, he became the first overseas manager to be awarded the Manager of the Year Trophy.

As soon as he joined Arsenal, Arsène Wenger set about transforming the face, not only of the Highbury club, but, indirectly, all of English football. By completely transforming the training methods and introducing totally new dietary requirements – in addition to using a variety of coaches and experts unheard of in English football at that time – clubs throughout the country began to re-evaluate their structures. It helped his cause, needless to say, when Arsenal won the League and FA Cup double in only his second season in charge.

Gradually, Wenger was able to change what had been a predominantly cautious Arsenal side into a vibrant attacking force, without losing the ability to defend when necessary. The greatest achievement of his Premier League career – and one that will always be regarded as one of the finest feats ever – was to go the whole of the 2003/04 campaign without suffering a single defeat.

Key to all of Arsenal’s success under Wenger has been his talent at bringing young players through into the first team and signing relatively unknown players and grooming them into world superstars. Patrick Viera, Nicolas Anelka and Emmanuel Adebayor were all transformed at Arsenal. Players such as Anelka were bought for £500,000 and later sold for over £22 million!

The recent injury to striker Robin Van Persie, who had previously been enjoying great success this season, has put the onus on the Arsenal manager to find a similar player during the January transfer window. To outsiders, it does seem as if the comparatively long period since the team’s last trophy – the FA Cup in 2005 – is perhaps beginning to put pressure, much of it self-imposed, on the manager.

Famous for not having seen controversial incidents involving his players, his recent uncharacteristic outburst at a Press Conference when asked a question about Theo Walcott’s fitness was followed by some strange comments about Didier Drogba not doing much in the league game in which he completely dominated the Arsenal defence. Finally, after the League Cup Quarter Final defeat at Manchester City, Wenger took off down the Eastlands’ tunnel without shaking Mark Hughes’ hand after a little ‘spat’ between them during the game.

Despite this, at times, ungallant attitude, Arsène Wenger continues to produce football teams that can delight the neutral spectator because of their passing, movement and fluency. Already Arsenal’s longest serving manager, Arsène Wenger, O.B.E. and Freeman of the Borough of Islington, will surely bring another trophy or two back to north London in the near future.

The Dial as they were originally known in 1886 was formed by the employee’s – notably, David Danskin, of a munitions factory in Woolwich, London. In 1904 saw them promoted to Division one where they stayed for a further 10 years but the Club financially was in a mess. In 1910, their saviour came in the form of a Mr Henry George Norris, a business man and Politian who made his money from property development. Unfortunately though in 1913 they were relegated back to Division 2. It was around this time that the shrewd Henry Norris’s desire to move the Club to a new ground in a superior location was realized. Highbury also known as “The Home of Football” became The Arsenal or Arsenal, as they were now known, new home. With this move also created a rivalry with local Football Club Tottenham Hotspurs, which is a strong today as it was back then. Other factors made this bitterness between these two Clubs even more raw, with allegations made towards Henry Norris, but these just remained as rumours.

Huddersfield’s ex and well-respected Football Manager, Herbert Chapman took control of the Arsenal squad in 1925. Despite the fact that Chapman was an ex player himself but on a smaller scale it was his Managerial skills he will always be remembered for. His ideas and philosophy brought success to Arsenal in winning the FA Cup during the 1929/1930 season then came the League Championship twice in 1930/1931 – 1932/1933. Sadly, in 1934 Herbert Chapman died of suspected pneumonia. His legacy and football gifts did carry on in the hands of George Allison with further League wins in 1933/34 – 1933/35 plus the FA Cup again in 1935/36 and yet again the League 1937/38. With Allison in charge, The Gunners became the best English Club in the 1930’s and George Allison is one of the longest serving Managers Arsenal has had to present day.

Post war years saw Arsenal FC have there ups and downs with Managers coming and going. Their success in the 30’s eluded them but they did mange to win the League under Tom Whittaker in the 1947/48 season and then in 1952/53. The 50’s and 60’s were over-all tough decades for The Gunners who struggled, the football gifts in quality players they were once accustomed to no longer existed and finding replacements wasn’t forthcoming. Wolverhampton Wanderers and England legend Billy Wright took the Managerial reigns in 1962-1966 but that also was to no avail.

Their fortunes turned when in 1966 the football gifts of, Bertie Mee, was selected as new Manager. Mee had good football history, with both himself and his younger brother players but through injury, Mee had to opt for early retirement. Joining the Royal Army Medical Corps, he made sergeant 6 years later and it was also here that he trained in physiotherapist. This gave him the ideal occupation for football work. The success Arsenal craved for was just around the corner. In 1969/70, they won the Inter Cities Fairs Cup a European Trophy. This was just a small token in comparison to what followed when in 1969/70 The Gunners achieved their first double win- The League and FA Cup. Even though lifting another trophy was a few years down the line, they still managed to book three FA Cup Finals in the 70’s but came off in 2nd place until 1979/80 beating Manchester Untied FC 3-2 in what can only be described as a classic.

The early 80’s for Arsenal FC were just middle-of-the-road in terms of success but they were in for another good spell. In 1986 saw the return of former player George Graham as Manager. The Club won the League Cup in 1986/87; Grahams first season in charge as Manager, followed by a League Title win in 1988/89 season. Then another big double, the FA Cup and League Cup in 1992/93. More was to come when they lifted the European, Cup Winners Cup in 1993/94. The Club had gone from strength to strength under Graham. In 1995 all that was shattered when he was sacked for dubious dealings in player transfers to the Club.

In 1996, French Manager Arsen Wenger was appointed new Manager of The Gunners.  Bringing with him his football gifts, European style and foreign signings and a much-needed discipline to the Club, Arsenal achieved great triumph under him.  In 1997/98, they won another League Cup double plus reached the UEFA Final in 1999/2000 but just missed out against Galatasaray on penalties. Another double was making its way to Arsenal in the 2001/02 season. The Gunners again won the FA Cup in 2002/03 and the Premier League. In winning the Premier League that season, they did it in awesome style – not loosing a single game throughout which totalled 49 matches. This is a record in itself in Premiership Football that still stands today (2009). The 2004/05 saw The Gunners once more lift the FA Cup. Up until 2005/06 Arsenal hadn’t had much luck when it came to the Champions League, this season they reached the final but were just beaten past the line by Barcelona 2-1. For 93 years Arsenals home had been Highbury but this ended when they moved to the new impressive £430 million Emirates Stadium in July 2006, one of the largest football stadiums in the UK.
