Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen is the subject of interest from Arsenal, but the Gunners face a bidding war with North London rivals Tottenham, Metro reports.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has monitored the progress of the 24 year old and is ready to make a bid for Vertonghen following Bayern Munich’s lack of interest. The Belgian international could form a partnership with Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen at the Emirates Stadium and Wenger is looking to make the deal happen.

Vertonghen’s agent Marjolein Nakhli has revealed that there is interest from abroad, but has not specified which sides want his client. The 24 year old has impressed at Ajax, where he is captain, and was a integral part of their league title success last season.

Wenger would have to pay £10m for Vertonghen and will have to act quickly before Spurs start to make inroads for signing the 24 year old. Current Arsenal defenders Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker are in good form this season, but Wenger is looking to add another quality centre-back to his squad.
